Construction Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (Raleigh)

Job Summary

The EHS Specialist will have the exciting opportunity to drive a people focused EHS culture in a fast-growing organization. You will partner with senior management, HR, and employees to ensure we are following all required protocols, creating an overall safe environment for our employees. This includes advising and assisting managers and supervisors on EHS matters You will also function as an employee advocate by establishing and maintaining clear lines of communication with internal costumers, maintaining awareness of employee EHS needs/issues and addressing these with the appropriate management team member.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Assist/Support the McFarland Construction Team as needed. On occasion this position may be required to provide project oversight support or estimating support.
  • Position is employed by McFarland Construction in support of our preconstruction and operations team.
  • Position will maintain and enforce an in-depth knowledge of all laws, regulations and company standards surrounding construction and workplace safety.
  • Position will work in collaboration with internal / external teams, which may consist of clients, McFarland Construction personnel, teaming partners, suppliers, A/E firms and other industry/community stakeholders.
  • Position will review, revise, monitor and update the McFarland EHS Manual as needed.

Support the following Pre-Construction processes.

  • Bid package development with specific attention to safety requirements.
  • Constructability analysis with specific attention to safety risk mitigation.
  • Developing project specific safety plans.
  • Job hazard analysis identification and mitigation.
  • Project Scope reviews for safety compliance.
  • Review of logistics plans for safety considerations.
  • Review Subcontractor/supplier safety plans/data to confirm alignment/compliance with McFarland and/or client safety requirements.
  • Safety planning
  • Schedule input for safety considerations
  • Scope analysis/development
  • Special assignments with clients and/or strategic partners to review, audit oversee and/or develop safety procedures.

Support the following project management processes.

  • Audit projects for safety.
  • Audit OCR, JHA and other safety reports for compliance, accuracy, and effective utilization.
  • Interface with McFarland Construction project personnel to support. Coach and promote OSHA compliant work practices.
  • Interface with client safety representatives to foster proactive communication and risk mitigation.
  • Investigation of all incidents, near misses, accidents, etc.
  • Performance tracking of McFarland Construction and supplies
  • Prepare and respond to client safety inquires, registrations, annual updates, requests for information, etc.
  • Prepare OCR, JHA, and other field operation related reports.
  • OSHA reporting, tracking and compliance.
  • Oversee processes to consistently improve McFarland Construction’s EMR.
  • Safety training of McFarland Construction personnel.
  • Supporting the project teams with toolbox talk topics and safety awareness.

Education & Additional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in EHS Program Management
  • Working knowledge of EPA and OSHA regulations and industry EH&S standards
  • Strong knowledge in electrical safety and high voltage including OSHA and NFPA 70E compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls for workplace hazards.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and analytical skills
  • Strong writing capabilities, especially with writing clear, concise EHS procedures
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to interface with all levels of the organization.
  • Travel up to 25% when necessary
